The piano melody around which our song is based was inspired by the call of the Kaua‘i ‘ō‘ō, a bird native to the Hawaiian island of Kaua‘i. The last Kaua‘i ‘ō‘ō was male and died in 1987 but not before he was recorded singing a mating call to a female who would never come [link]. His call is a recurring motif in our song. This last male Kaua‘i ‘ō‘ō was an endling: the last of his species.

The lyrics of our song explore the endling theme, as well as wider themes such as communication barriers and calling out in a language without receiving the desired response or being properly understood. Tairm, our song’s title, is a Gaelic word meaning both ‘an echo’ and ‘a gathering summons’. In the first verse, the voice in the song is calling out for a response and imploring the wind to carry his/her message. The second verse is based around similar Gaelic words with very different meanings: ceileir ‘sing, warble, chirp’ and the related noun ceilear ‘(act of) singing, warbling, chirping; lively music’; ceilear ‘concealer, someone who hides’; and cèile ‘partner, significant other’. Frustration builds to a climax in the second vocal section.
