about

Rather than a specific species, Scott was inspired by the way he believes humanity needs to reinterpret its relationship to the other species on the planet.
Music saves things from extinction all the time: memories, melodies, cultures, relationships, knowledge.

It seems to me that what is needed to stop the extinction of some (and then all) lifeforms on earth is a radical reappraisal of our relationship to them: replacing a single centre (usually ourselves) with an awareness of the interconnectedness of all living things which are due far greater care, respect and dignity than they are often given.

The process of making this track is an attempt to model in sound this reappraisal of a source: in this case, old Gaelic records found in a charity shop. These records were sampled onto microcassette via an old dictaphone (also found in a charity shop), before being processed and arranged on a computer.

The only purely acoustic sound - the clarsach - takes interest in and care of these old melodies, reimagining its relationship to them throughout the piece as they degrade and disappear. By the end, the harp itself is imbued with them.
