This piece was inspired by the Golden Toad. Due to its very limited habitat I composed a 6 note 'toad theme' which travels through the piece. It is manipulated in the second 'verse' to show the unstable nature of the toad's environment before its extinction.

The golden element of the toad is represented by audio effects and extended harp techniques.

Finally, the harmonic sequence and bass line is designed to be slightly off putting. Although rhythmic and driving, the piece has undercurrents of tension and negative emotions, amplified by the shifting time signatures and manipulations of melodic material.

Although, on the surface, full of toad-like jollity, the under-rhythms of the piece are threatening and dark, before the extinction of the toad, and final 'fade-out' of the music.

Sam MacAdam is a harpist based in Scotland. Originally trained in both classical harp and traditional Scottish clarsach, she now focuses on multitrack 'maximalist - minimalist' style compositions.
