about

‘Down For The Count’ is a sound installation accompanied by a small booklet. It was originally exhibited at Extrapool, Nijmegen,
The Netherlands in September 2020, as part of “Lets met dieren #2”. This is a 7-minute edit, especially for Remembrance Species.

This sound piece serves as an ode to 15 endangered bird species from around the world, like the Kakapo, the Regent Honeyeater, the Great Curassow and more. It expresses admiration and celebrates these beautiful birds, which are on the brink of extinction, with hopes to raise awareness and attract attention. The relaxing and meditative soundscape consists of their songs and mating calls. These birds are endangered due to the climate crisis, deforestation, poaching, introduced predators and mainly because of us, humans. The booklet serves to illustrate that and it’s also uploaded for your open call. All the proceeds I collected from the 30 copies I made were donated to the “Kakapo Recovery” fund. The file I sent you is in the limit of 7 minutes, but the original is 17’00. You can find the full version, pictures of the booklet and complete list of the birds' names on my website, radinakordova.com.

Radina Kordova is an interdisciplinary artist, based in Groningen, The Netherlands. Her inspiration comes from human behaviour, pollution and the current situation in the world. She reflects on topics connected to climate crisis and psychology by creating soundscape installations, sculptures and textual pieces. Her art practice is going through some changes because the world is literally on fire, so her focus has shifted towards reusing, repurposing and recycling materials, telling stories and raising awareness towards environmental issues. On days when her thoughts and ideas are more lightweight, she likes to collaborate, organise events and experiment with different mediums.
