about

Axolotls are salamanders from Mexico named after the Aztec god Xolotl and are known as a 'walking fish' despite actually being amphibians.
They are rather interesting creatures with cute goofy smiles, who never develop lungs and remain aquatic, gilled and in the water.
Axolotls have become an important lab model for a variety of things such as tissue repair due to their incredible ability to regenerate severed limbs.
They appear to enjoy swimming, climbing and walking in the water and come in a variety of colours depending on if they are wild or bred in captivity.
As of 2010, the wild axolotl is critically endangered due to pollution, habitat degradation and water diversion from humans (and of course the African tilapia which you've mentioned already in your blurb).
While there are many axolotls alive which are kept as pets or in laboratories, the wild axolotl is only found in the lake complex of Xochimilco.
Researchers are currently trying to help the wild axolotl population
by building shelters in Xochimilico, with stacks of rocks and reedy plants to help filter clean water that's pumped in.
