about

For this project we were inspired by the story of the last Great Auk in Britain and the isolated sea stack, Stac an Armin where it took refuge. The auk was captured by fishermen to sell to collectors. When a great storm blew up around them they killed the auk believing it to be a witch.

The piece is in part a lament for this lonely bird, but also considers the hostile environments that seabirds, and many other animals, use as a refuge. One species' isolated in another species' refuge. Often however like in the case of the last Great Auk in Britain, this refuge is still not enough.
