The species that inspired me for this song was the Great Auk,
pinguinus impennis, that was hunted to extinction around the 1850s. It was a very common alcid on both sides of the Northern Atlantic Ocean. Sailors later gave penguins their Latin name because of physical similarities to the Great Auk, although the species are not related and live on opposite poles. The Great Auk could not fly, and was not afraid of humans or other predators. It could dive up to 1km deep, which exceeds any other modern alcid. It accelerated under water and glided through the air onto the rocks, which probably was the closest it came to ”real” flying. The Great Auk mated for life and could become up to 25 years old. Their call was
supposedly hoarse and deep.
Although only imaginary, its call, behaviour and sad stories about its extinction made me write this song both about, and for, the Great Auk.
