This sound-work is called Anguilla Anguilla (that’s the Latin name for the European Eel, a critically-endangered species)
The piece evolved from an anecdote my father-in-law used to tell about catching eels in his boyhood. Since developing Alzheimer’s, he’s returned frequently to this story, with the narrative becoming progressively fractured, interrupted and detuned; like the Eel - parts of his memories are becoming slippery, hard to grasp - and extinct.
I was inspired by a kind of metaphorical synergy between his tale, his illness and the mysterious cyclical end of life journey of the European Eel, which travels the width of the Atlantic, guided by a force little understood, to return to the place of its birth.
The piece is probably best described as a weird, abstract sonic-sketch or assembly of ideas, to be continued someday. Perhaps its not really what you’re after, but hope you don’t mind me sending it in anyway.
