about

Birds and their songs are embedded in our cultural landscape across the world. And yet some of the most common birds in the UK, 67 species, are now on the RSPB’s Red List of endangered birds. What will the world sound like when there aren’t any birds? Who will remember their song? This piece, 'Silent Spring' is a meditation on the slowly depleting natural world around us, and in particular the possible extinction of the familiar song thrush. The song thrush is such a recognisable garden bird here in the UK, and yet their numbers in the UK are declining rapidly. Much of the material of this piece stems from a recording of Annie Johnston imitating the song thrush (smeòrach) in the song Cainnt nan Eun, recorded by J. L. Campbell on Barra (Outer Hebrides) between 1930 and 1950. I wanted to capture a sense of this conversation between humans and the song thrush that has broken down - the very real possibility of this bird disappearing from our world entirely.
