about

In the exploration of the axolotl’s regenerative capabilities, scientists study the DNA from Mexican axolotls and tiger Salamanders, as well as hybrids between the two species. For this piece, I used the data from a so - called “shotgun sequencing” of a DNA sample taken from the tail tip of a male tiger salamander in a laboratory at the University of Kentucky (SRA study no. SRP173127). The data was published open access in 2020 at the webpage of the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

One percent of the raw data from the experiment was turned into an audio wave and manipulated to create sounds reminiscent of drums, string instruments and voices. In order to preserve the original rhythmic structure of the DNA sequence, no sequencer was used. All the sounds heard in the sound file originate from the original raw data file.

By creating sounds based on the DNA sample I want to consider the possibility of giving the invisible animals of DNA research laboratories a voice. Axolotls are associated with the promise of eternal life, but in the pursuit of this promise, humans tend to
forget the individual axolotls and tiger salamanders who pay the price for this venture.
